The Symbols of
Ukrainian State
The national
flag of Ukraine consists of two horizontal stripes. The top is blue and
the bottom is yellow. These are the colours of the sky, the rivers and
the golden fields of our beautiful country. Blue and yellow (or gold) were
symbols of Kyivan Rus many centuries ago. They were important colours of the
Cossack age. The flag first became the national symbol of Ukraine in 1848. It
came back in 1992 when Ukraine became аn independent
state.
The trident is
an ancient symbol of Ukrainian people. Its history began about 1,000 years ВC.
In the 10th century it became the emblem of Kyivan princes Volodymyr Velykyi
and Yaroslav Mudryi. It officially became the national
emblem again in 1992.
The anthem of
Ukraine is "Sche ne vmerla Ukrainy...". Pavlo Chubynskyi wrote the
words in 1863 and later composer Mykhilo Verbytskyi wrote the music. First it
became the national anthem in 1919. In 1992 it came back again.

The Ukrainian Language
The Ukrainian language is one of the
oldest in the world. It is the second most widely spoken (найпоширеніша) language of twelve surviving
members (вцілілих представників) of the Slavic (слов'янська) group of the large Indo-European language family.
Geographically, it is classified with Russian and Belorussian as an East Slavic
language.
First you come across Ukrainian in literature of the XII century. The evolution of the language can be traced from (можна простежити з) the early texts, such as Gospel of Kamianets-Strumilov (Кам'янець-Струміловське Євангеліє) (1411), written in Old Ukrainian, or the Peresopnytsky Gospel (1556-1561), where a more developed, Middle Ukrainian Language was used. Modern Ukrainian language was the first time used in literature by Ivan Kotliarevsky in 1700s.
Modern Ukrainian is represented by a set of dialects. Traditionally scholars divided (вчені розділилися) into three main groups, Northern, South-Western and South-Eastern. The difference between these three dialects is not very strong. The standard language is based mainly (базується в основному) on the Poltava-Kyiv dialect of the South-Eastern group.
Because of the historical conditions (умови)
it was difficult to the Ukrainian language to develop (щоб розвиватись).
Now Ukraine is independent. Ukrainian language, traditions and culture are being revived (відроджуються). Ukrainian is the official state language; it is being studied and is the subject of academic research. Official status of Ukrainian provides its introduction in the legislation, ministry, civil organizations and enterprises, the court system, international treatments and agreement, the school system from kindergarten to higher educational institutions, scientific publications and the mass media (вона вивчається і є предметом академічних досліджень. Офіційний статус української мови передбачає її впровадження в законодавство, міністерство, громадські організації та підприємства, судову систему, міжнародні режими та угоди, шкільну систему від дитячих садків до вищих навчальних закладів, наукові видання та ЗМІ.)

Sport is very important in our life. The general belief is (вважається) that a

Physically inactive (неактивні) people get old earlier that
those, who find time for sport activity. And of course good health is
better than good medicine.
People all over the world are fond of sports
and games. In our country sport is being widely popularized as well (теж широко
розповсюджений). The most popular kinds of sport are football, volleyball,
basketball, tennis, figure-skating, aerobics, ping-pong and swimming. A lot of
people are fond of jogging. In schools and colleges
sport is a compulsory (обов’язковий) subject. Many young people attend
sport sections. Some of them dream to become professional sportsmen.
As for me, I can’t imagine my life without sport. In summer I go
jogging every morning and when I have free time I attend swimming pool. In
winter I like to skate with my friends. It’s
fun. Also I’m fond of aerobics. First of all aerobics helps to keep myself fit.
It also attracts me because it resembles dancing.
In conclusion I’d like to say that I’m absolutely sure
that doing
sports is the best way to keep fit (підтримувати форму). Sport
makes our bodies strong, it prevents (запобігає) us
from getting too fat (ожирінню), and makes us more
self-organized and better disciplined.
